Mt Rainier National Park has announced that all wilderness permits for 2016 will be available on a first-come, first-served system (walk-up) only. Permits can be applied for only on the day before or day of the trip at the Wilderness Centers at Longmire and White River or the Carbon River Ranger Station. In prior years, the majority of permits were available for advance reservations.

An internet-based reservations system is planned to go online in 2017. In the meantime, car campgrounds like Cougar Rock can still be reserved via Recreation.gov

The Seattle Times also has a good article on the new system and the potential for long lines at the Ranger Stations. So does the WTA.
